A42 panels count down the distance to a level crossing: three red bars at 150 m, two at 100 m and one at 50 m. This is the one bar panel.
Class I (RA1) sheeting returns 70 cd/(lx·m²) for white to the driver and has a 7-year service life, enough on roads where headlights are the only light: local, minor and private roads or quiet streets. In areas with street lighting, shop windows, advertising and dense urban traffic, however, SR 1848-2 requires prismatic class 2 or 3 sheeting.
They go on the approach to a level crossing, at distances measured from the barrier or, where there is none, from the nearest rail: 150 m for the 3-bar panel, 100 m for the 2-bar one and 50 m for the 1-bar one. If the panels would fall inside a bend or in an area with poor visibility, they are repeated on the left side as well, together with the A39 or A40. Whichever side they stand on, the slanted bars slope down towards the carriageway. They are not used for industrial railways.
Unlike other signs, the A42 and A43 panels and the A44–A46 markers are mounted low: the bottom edge sits 0.75 m above the edge of the carriageway (SR 1848-2). Fixings for the post are included: 3 clamps for Ø48 mm posts and 6 bolts with nuts. Clamps for Ø60 mm posts are available on request.
The post is ordered separately. For a fixed installation in a concrete foundation: the galvanised Ø48 mm post, 300 cm. For temporary use, with no foundation: the Ø48 mm tripod post, 120 cm. On concrete or paving, where you cannot dig: the Ø60 mm flange post, 300 cm, bolted down; for it, ask for the Ø60 mm clamps when you order.

The sheeting is class I (RA1), with a 7-year service life. Under SR 1848-2, during that time retroreflection stays at no less than 80% of the initial minimum value and the sheeting stays bonded over at least 95% of the surface.
50 m before the barrier or, if there is none, before the nearest rail. The three-bar panel stands at 150 m, the two-bar one at 100 m and the one-bar one at 50 m.
Where the sign does not compete with other lights: on roads and streets without strong lighting, on local, minor or private roads. In areas with many light sources (street lighting, shop windows, advertising), SR 1848-2 requires prismatic class 2 or 3 sheeting.
