Tactile paving for the visually impaired
Tactile tiles are bonded to pavements, platforms and floors and give blind people information they can feel underfoot or with a white cane. For partially sighted people the colour matters too, and it has to contrast with the floor around it.
Two types, two messages
- Guidance – raised parallel ribs that show the direction of travel along an obstacle-free route;
- Warning (STOP) – raised domes that mark a place to stop: a pedestrian crossing, a staircase, the edge of a platform, a tram line.
A typical route combines both: guidance tiles lead the person along the pavement or hall, and warning tiles stop them before the crossing, the stairs or the platform. Both are the same thickness, so they are bonded side by side.
Formats and colours
All tiles are made of TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane), are 0.8 cm thick and have a non-slip surface. They come in three formats:
- 30 x 30 cm – ATZ 9003 (guidance) and ATZ 9004 (warning);
- 40 x 40 cm – ATZ 9005 (guidance) and ATZ 9006 (warning);
- 30 x 60 cm – ATE 8016 (guidance) and ATE 8014 (STOP).
Each comes in yellow RAL 1003 and in black RAL 9017. Yellow shows up on grey paving, asphalt or dark tiles; black on white tiles or light-coloured stone.
Installation and quantities
The tiles are bonded with epoxy adhesive, which is not included. One square metre takes 11.1 tiles of 30 x 30 cm, 6.25 of 40 x 40 cm or 5.56 of 30 x 60 cm. A 10 m route, 30 cm wide, needs 34 tiles of 30 x 30 cm or 17 of 30 x 60 cm.
