P39 Additional Panel – Central Obstacle (Raised Island), 60x60 cm, Class I
The P39 warns of a physical obstacle in the middle of the road ahead, such as a raised island at a town entrance: the diagram shows the two directions passing the island.
When class I is used
Class I (RA1) sheeting returns 70 cd/(lx·m²) for white to the driver and has a 7-year service life, enough on roads where headlights are the only light: local, minor and private roads or quiet streets. In areas with street lighting, shop windows, advertising and dense urban traffic, however, SR 1848-2 requires prismatic class 2 or 3 sheeting.
Where it goes, under SR 1848-1:2024
It goes before a physical obstacle in the middle of the road, under the A31 (other danger), and can be repeated on the left side of the road as needed.
SR 1848-1:2024 requires additional panels to go under the sign they complete; where technically possible, the P9, P10 or P11 symbols can be included in the main sign itself.
