B2 Priority Sign – Stop, 80 cm, Class I

The 80 cm STOP is the format SR 1848-2 requires on county and local roads and on streets. The red octagon is the only sign with this shape, so it is recognised at once, even when the legend is covered in snow.

When class I is used

The sign has class I (RA1) retroreflective sheeting: 70 cd/(lx·m²) for white and a 7-year service life. It is the economical choice for places without many light sources, such as local, minor and private roads or streets without strong lighting. Where there is street lighting, shop windows or advertising, SR 1848-2 requires prismatic class 2 or 3 sheeting, which stands out better against a lit background.

Where it goes, under SR 1848-1:2024

It goes on the minor public road or cycle track, at junctions without good visibility, or where a cycle track or cycle road meets the carriageway, as close as possible to the edge of the priority road, but so that stopped vehicles do not block pedestrians crossing. It is also used at crossings with a railway without barriers, other than an industrial line, where it goes with the A47 or A48 cross. The B2 can be signed in advance with an identical sign and the P4 panel, showing the distance in metres to the edge of the road ahead.

At junctions, signs on the minor roads are placed so that their face cannot be seen from the priority road. At acute-angle junctions the sign is set back from the edge of the priority road; if it stands more than 10 m back, the P4 additional panel with the distance goes under it.

Technical data

• red octagon 80 cm high (normal format, SR 1848-2), 9 mm white border and white STOP legend with 300 mm letters;
• 1 mm galvanised steel sheet, with rounded corners and pressed edges, no sharp edges;
• electrostatically painted with UV-resistant paint;
• class I retroreflective sheeting (RA1), resistant to UV and weathering, with a 7-year service life;
• weight: 5 kg;
• fixings included: 2 clamps for Ø48 mm posts and 4 bolts with nuts;
• CE marked; compliant with SR EN 12899-1:2007, SR 1848-1:2024, SR 1848-2:2011 and SR 1848-3:2011.

Mounting and size

Fixings for the post are included: 2 clamps for Ø48 mm posts and 4 bolts with nuts; clamps for Ø60 mm posts are available on request. The bottom edge of the sign goes 1.50–2.50 m above the road or kerb, and the edge nearest the road 0.50–2.0 m from the road platform. When they share a post, priority signs go above mandatory signs.

The post is ordered separately. For a fixed installation in a concrete foundation: the galvanised Ø48 mm post, 300 cm. For temporary use, with no foundation: the Ø48 mm tripod post, 120 cm. On concrete or paving, where you cannot dig: the Ø60 mm flange post, 300 cm, bolted down; for it, ask for the Ø60 mm clamps when you order.

The 80 cm height is the normal format in SR 1848-2. National roads call for the large 100 cm format, and motorways for the 120 cm one. The class II sheeting versions are the B2_80_II at 80 cm and the B2_II at 100 cm. For private premises and yards the 60 cm B2 is enough.
