Product description

B1 Priority Sign – Give Way, 70 cm, Class I

The B1 is the upside-down triangle: the sign that your road does not have priority. It does not require a full stop, only slowing down enough to let vehicles on the road you are joining go first.

When class I is used

Class I means RA1 retroreflective sheeting, with 70 cd/(lx·m²) for white and a 7-year service life. It suits places where the sign does not compete with other lights: roads and streets without strong lighting, local, minor and private roads. In areas with many light sources, such as streets with public lighting, shop windows and advertising, SR 1848-2 requires prismatic class 2 or 3 sheeting, because a class I sign gets lost against the background there. The class II versions are the B1_90_II (90 cm) and the B1_II (120 cm).

Where it goes, under SR 1848-1:2024

It goes on the minor public road or cycle track, at junctions with good visibility, or where a cycle track or cycle road meets the carriageway. The sign requires drivers to slow down enough to give way to vehicles on the road they are approaching and, if needed, to stop before its edge. If the priority road changes direction at the junction, the P20 additional panel (“Direction of the priority road”) goes under the sign. The B1 can be signed in advance with an identical sign and the P4 panel, which shows the distance in metres to the edge of the road ahead.

At junctions, signs on the minor roads are placed so that their face cannot be seen from the priority road. At acute-angle junctions the sign is set back from the edge of the priority road; if it stands more than 10 m back, the P4 additional panel with the distance goes under it.

Technical data

  • 1 mm galvanised steel sheet, with rounded corners and pressed edges, no sharp edges;
  • electrostatically painted with UV-resistant paint;
  • class I retroreflective sheeting (RA1), resistant to UV and weathering, with a 7-year service life;
  • weight: 2 kg;
  • fixings included: 2 clamps for Ø48 mm posts and 4 bolts with nuts;
  • CE marked; compliant with SR EN 12899-1:2007, SR 1848-1:2024, SR 1848-2:2011 and SR 1848-3:2011.
Mounting and size

Fixings for the post are included: 2 clamps for Ø48 mm posts and 4 bolts with nuts; clamps for Ø60 mm posts are available on request. The bottom edge of the sign goes 1.50–2.50 m above the road or kerb, and the edge nearest the road 0.50–2.0 m from the road platform. When they share a post, priority signs go above mandatory signs.

The post is ordered separately. For a fixed installation in a concrete foundation: the galvanised Ø48 mm post, 300 cm. For temporary use, with no foundation: the Ø48 mm tripod post, 120 cm. On concrete or paving, where you cannot dig: the Ø60 mm flange post, 300 cm, bolted down; for it, ask for the Ø60 mm clamps when you order.

The 70 cm side is the small format in SR 1848-2, meant for low-traffic local roads and for short-term signing by the police. County and local roads, streets and private roads open to public traffic call for the normal 90 cm format: the B1_90_I. On car parks and private driveways closed to public traffic the standard may be applied but is not mandatory, so the 70 cm format is enough there.

? Frequently asked questions

Where does the B1 “Give way” sign go?

It goes on the minor public road or cycle track, at junctions with good visibility, or where a cycle track or cycle road meets the carriageway. The sign requires drivers to slow down enough to give way to vehicles on the road they are approaching and, if needed, to stop before its edge. If the priority road changes direction at the junction, the P20 additional panel (“Direction of the priority road”) goes under the sign. The B1 can be signed in advance with an identical sign and the P4 panel, which shows the distance in metres to the edge of the road ahead.

Is the 70 cm B1 right for a county road or a street?

No. 70 cm is the small format in SR 1848-2. County and local roads, streets and private roads open to public traffic call for the normal 90 cm format: the B1_90_I. The 70 cm format suits low-traffic local roads and private car parks or yards closed to public traffic.

How high is it mounted and which fixings come with it?

The bottom edge goes 1.50–2.50 m above the road or kerb, and the inner edge 0.50–2.0 m from the road platform. The pack holds 2 clamps for Ø48 mm posts and 4 bolts with nuts; clamps for Ø60 mm posts are available on request.

How long does the reflective sheeting last?

The sheeting is class I (RA1), with a 7-year service life. Under SR 1848-2, during that time retroreflection stays at no less than 80% of the initial minimum value and the sheeting stays bonded over at least 95% of the surface.

When do I use the B1 and when the B2?

The B1 goes where drivers on the minor road can see traffic clearly and give way without stopping. The B2 goes where visibility is poor and stopping is necessary, and at railway crossings without barriers.

When is class I sheeting used?

Where the sign does not compete with other lights: on roads and streets without strong lighting, on local, minor or private roads. In areas with many light sources (street lighting, shop windows, advertising), SR 1848-2 requires prismatic class 2 or 3 sheeting.

Is there a class II version?

Yes: the B1_90_II (90 cm) and the B1_II (120 cm), with prismatic class II (RA2) sheeting, which returns about three to four times more light from the headlights and has a 10-year service life, against 7 years for class I.

Is the sign CE marked?

Yes. It is CE marked and complies with SR EN 12899-1:2007, the European standard for vertical road signs, and with SR 1848-1:2024, SR 1848-2:2011 and SR 1848-3:2011. The sheeting and the paint resist UV and weathering.

Consumers can claim their rights under the legal guarantee of conformity, for example if goods:

  • do not match the description;
  • do not function as intended.

Sellers are liable for any lack of conformity which existed when the goods were delivered, and which becomes apparent within the legal guarantee period. Sellers in such a situation are required to offer:

  • free repair or free replacement;
  • in some cases, a price reduction or full reimbursement.

Some countries have a longer legal guarantee period. For second-hand goods, a shorter period may apply, but not less than one year.

  1. Contact the seller as soon as possible to report the issue;
