Group A of SR 1848-1:2024: bends, narrowings, level crossings and other hazards.
Warning signs tell drivers that there is a hazard on the road ahead and what kind of hazard it is: a sharp bend, a narrowing, a level crossing, animals on the road. Here you will find the group A signs of the SR 1848-1:2024 standard, from A1 “Left bend” to A52 “U-turn point ahead”.
Most of them are equilateral triangles with a red border, a white background and a black symbol. A few have shapes of their own: the A5 and A6 bend panels, the A42 and A43 bar panels that count down the distance to a railway or a motorway exit, the A44–A46 markers and the A47–A50 crosses at level crossings.
They are made of 1 mm galvanised steel sheet, with rounded corners and pressed edges, no sharp edges, and are electrostatically painted. The face has class I retroreflective sheeting, with a 7-year service life. The 70 cm triangle weighs 2 kg and comes with 2 clamps for Ø48 mm posts and 4 bolts with nuts; clamps for Ø60 mm are available on request. The signs are CE marked and comply with SR EN 12899-1:2007, SR 1848-1:2024, SR 1848-2:2011 and SR 1848-3:2011.
SR 1848-2 sets four formats for triangles: small (60 cm), normal (70 cm), large (90 cm) and very large (120 cm). The normal 70 cm format is meant for county and local roads, streets and private roads open to public traffic. National roads call for large signs and motorways for very large ones; a format smaller than the one set for the road is not allowed. Some signs also come in a 90 cm version with class II sheeting, in the Metal Road Signs (Class II) category.
In built-up areas a warning sign goes no more than 50 m before the hazard, outside built-up areas 100–250 m before it, and on motorways and expressways 500–1,000 m before it, with the P4 additional panel showing the distance. If the dangerous section is longer than 1,000 m, the P8 panel goes under the sign, and beyond 3 km the sign is repeated every kilometre. The bottom edge sits 1.50–2.50 m above the road, 0.50–2.0 m from the road platform, on the right-hand side. Each product page gives the placement conditions for that particular sign.
Posts for mounting are in the Road Sign Posts category. Public institutions can also buy the signs through SEAP / SICAP.
The 70 cm triangle, the normal format, is for county and local roads, streets and private roads open to public traffic. National roads call for 90 cm and motorways for 120 cm.
It is the basic retroreflective sheeting in SR 1848-2, with a guaranteed 7-year service life. Class II and III sheeting reflects more strongly and lasts 10 years, and in areas with many light sources the standard calls for prismatic sheeting of class II or III.
